The duration of internship is normally two months on a full time basis – this maybe exceptionally extended for a maximum period of six months. It is awarded on the recommendation of the Director of the respective Division.

Interns are not paid and are responsible for all expenses related to the internship. UNECA accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon awarding an internship, candidates will be required to sign a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of the conditions of service.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in Public Information and Knowledge Management Division (PIKMD) in the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Addis Ababa Ethiopia. The Intern works under the supervision of a staff member in the Division/Section to which they are assigned

Responsibilities

As part of its preparations for various high-level meetings and conferences including the upcoming ADF 2016, PIKMD’s Communication Section seeks the services of a media assistant to implement its media outreach activities. Under the general supervision of the Communications officer, duties will include:

-media monitoring,
-build and maintain media contact databases,
-assist in organizing media events such as press conferences/briefings, workshops,
-assist in preparation and distribution of press kits,
-duplicate and disseminate all press releases, speeches and other conference related documents to media,
-assist with Ethiopian government media clearance process
-assist in organizing guided tours of ECA,
-responsible for the media room,
-assist the Web team in the packaging of CDs, flash disks for major ECA publications and events.

Education

Applicants must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher); or if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree in Communication, Marketing, Media relations Journalism or related field. Be computer literate in standard software applications; Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter; and a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Knowledge of different aspects of public information and communication expertise particularly in the areas of design and implementation of major public information events, or campaigns; analysis and integration of diverse information from varied sources; solid understanding of new media platforms and trends. A conceptual understanding of the Theory of Change in the context of application of the concept in strategic communications would be an added advantage.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is desirable.
